🐾 Free Puppy Toilet Training Tips

Simple, practical tips to help you get started with puppy toilet training

Toilet training can feel like one of the biggest challenges when you first bring your puppy home. Accidents happen, routines can feel confusing, and it can be difficult to know whether you're getting it right.

The good news is that puppy toilet training - sometimes called potty training - doesn't need to be complicated. With a consistent routine, good timing and plenty of positive reinforcement, you can help your puppy understand where you want them to go.

🌟 The Five Musts

These are the key times your puppy is most likely to need the toilet:

  • Immediately after a nap

  • After a drink

  • After eating

  • After play

  • After Training

These moments are predictable, natural, and incredibly helpful for building a routine.

Pro-Tip: For a young puppy, start by offering a toilet opportunity around every 20 minutes while they're awake.

🐶 Build a Consistent Routine

Puppies learn fastest when life feels predictable.

  • Take your puppy  to their toilet area regularly, don't wait for them to tell you they need to go.

  • Take them to the same toilet spot every time.

  • Consistency is key.

  • Watch your puppy closely and learn their routine.

🧡 Reward the Right Behaviour

When your puppy goes to toilet in the right place give them an IMMEDIATE treat and plenty of praise,

Immediate rewards help your puppy understand exactly what they did right.

🚫 What NOT to Do

Don't tell your puppy off or punish them for accidents. Accidents are a normal part of learning, especially with young puppies.

Shouting, telling them off or showing them the accident won't help them understand where you want them to go - and may encourage them them to hide when they need the toilet

If an accident happens, stay calm, clean it up and carry on with your routine. Focus on showing your puppy where you do want them to go and reward them when they get it right.

🔍 Spot the Signs Early

Puppies often give subtle clues before they go.

  • Sniffing the floor more intently than usual

  • Circling - this is especially common before a poo

  • Barking or whining

  • Suddenly becoming restless or wandering away.

Pro-Tip: If you can't supervise your puppy closely, keep them in a smaller, puppy-safe area rather than giving them free run of the house. A puppy pen is ideal where space allows. This makes it much easier to spot when they need to go and helps prevent sneaky accidents.
